What are the obligations when paying radio and television fees for individuals, self-employed persons and companies?
The important deadline for registering to pay the concession fees for Czech Television and Czech Radio is approaching – by June 30, 2025. This obligation results from the amendment to Act No. 127/2005 Coll., effective from January 1, 2025, and applies to all companies and self-employed persons (SEOs).
Who must register?
Companies and self-employed persons
- Registration is mandatory for everyone , even if you don’t pay a fee.
- If you have fewer than 25 employees and own a vehicle that you do not rent to other people or companies, you do not pay the fee , but registration is still mandatory .
- Failure to register can result in a fine of up to CZK 10,000 , even if you are not required to pay.
Individuals
- You must pay the fee if you own at least one device that is technically capable of receiving a radio or television signal – e.g. television, radio, computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.
- It doesn’t matter whether you actually use the device – all that matters is that you own it and it can receive a signal .
- The household fee is paid by only one member of the household (exceptions include, for example, hostels, where each person pays separately).
- If you live in a rental property , the fee is paid by the tenant, unless otherwise stated in the contract .
Who is liberated?
The fee does not have to be paid:
- people with low incomes (up to 2.15 times the subsistence minimum – i.e. up to CZK 10,449).
- persons with severe disabilities (complete/virtual blindness of both eyes or complete/virtual deafness of both ears), if they live alone or in a household with another person with the same disability.
- Natural persons with temporary protection (refugees) do not have to pay the household fee , but if they are self-employed, they must register – just like all other self-employed persons.
Most households and businesses are subject to the radio and television fee obligation. It is worth taking a few minutes to check whether and to what extent it applies to you. Timely compliance with the legal requirements helps to avoid unnecessary problems with the authorities.
